a morning routine for mamas

Grumble all you want, but understand that you are here reading this for a reason.

You need a tried and true morning routine that you LOVE. You need quiet in the small hours of the day for your soul to awaken slowly. You need this for you!

A little over six years ago I gave birth to triplets, had a two-year-old at home and my husband was preparing to deploy. Let’s be real for half a second and admit that life was…well, hard to put into words.

I fully believe that there are seasons in life when we, as mamas, cannot do anything but survive. That’s the nature of our calling. On the flip side, there are seasons reserved for growth - it’s in these seasons we need quiet. We need to be kind to ourselves, wake before the kiddos, read our Bibles, pray that we hear our Father more clearly, and prepare ourselves for the day ahead. This is how we become better wives. Better mothers. Better friends. Better. Without this time during these beloved seasons we cannot make progress.

A sneak peek into my morning routine as a stay at home mom of four.

Four ways for finding a morning routine you LOVE:

::: wake up before the kids ::: THIS IS A MUST (unless you’re in newborn world and are up half the night, then girlfriend get your sleep and revisit this post next year 😘). If waking up is the issue, here is my advice - charge your phone (alarm) on the other side of the room. This means you have to get your cute butt out of that cozy bed to turn it off so why not keep on truckin’ with your morning?! And you won’t hit snooze! Don’t think you have to set the alarm for 4am. Try 20 minutes earlier than the kids wake up. Just twenty minutes to start. That’s plenty of time to hit the Keurig, open the Word, and say a short prayer.

::: caffeine ::: It doesn’t have to be coffee or tea or caffeine at all really, but whatever your go-to morning beverage happens to be - HAVE IT READY! Mine used to be coffee and now it’s a pre-workout, but one things remains true - this happens immediately after that alarm goes off. If I stand any chance of keeping my eyeballs open, I usually need caffeine on my side (or in my veins).

::: have a plan ::: This is so important. If you start waking up early, before your kiddos, and aren’t sure what to do, it could be wasted time. I encourage you to start a devotional or reading plan. Write in your gratitude journal. Set a timer and read your favorite fiction novel for ten minutes. Whatever gives you life and helps you start your day full of joy, do that. For me, it’s time in the Word, prayer and journaling. You do you here.

::: put the phone away ::: that’s right - remove distractions! I know this is hard and if we’re being honest this is my biggest struggle. I’ve had mornings where I start check ig stories and next thing I know I hear kids footsteps coming down the steps. Yikes. I understand if your devotional is on your tablet or phone but try to be intentional about your time! After all, this is YOUR morning and you’re wanting to get as much out of it as you can.
